Westminster Public Schools Kick Off New Year with Focus on Reading, Attendance

Students across Westminster Public Schools (WPS) returned to class last week, marking the official start of the new school year with fresh goals and renewed energy.

Superintendent Jeni Gotto, starting her second year as head of the district, spent the morning visiting Shaw Heights Middle School, where students and staff were welcomed back into a building that has seen significant upgrades over the summer. Most notably, Shaw Heights now has air-conditioning. District leaders say the improvements are part of their ongoing commitment to providing safe, engaging learning spaces that reflect the pride of the community.

“This is an exciting day for our students and families,” Gotto said. “Walking into Shaw Heights today, you can feel the difference. These upgrades send a clear message that our kids deserve the very best.”

In addition to celebrating facility upgrades, this year WPS is placing a special emphasis on two key areas: attendance and reading.

“Attendance and reading are the foundation of success,” Gotto explained. “When students are here consistently and reading at grade level, it sets them up for a lifetime of opportunities.”

Educators say one of the best ways for parents to encourage their students to read is for parents to read with their children, so students see how important it is.

WPS is part of a nationwide Attendance Awareness campaign with the theme of “Here Today, Ready for Tomorrow.”
