Bookmarks: A Book to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

As WPS wraps up its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, our latest selection, “Cajas de cartón” comes from Samantha Trevizo, the Lead Educational Interpreter for Westminster Public Schools.

“I like this book because it is a moving, autobiographical story that shows us the reality of many students who come to this country, reflecting the experience of immigrants, with whom I identify, and the reality where families seek a better life. It shows us that the school system can be an escape from a harsh reality and a promise of a better future, giving value to education, and with the right support, it can change the lives of children.”

Written by Francisco Jiménez and published in 1996, the title translates to Cardboard Boxes, but the English version of the book can be found under the name “The Circuit”. It follows the Jimenez family’s journey from Mexico to the United States as migrant workers. Many reviewers say its straightforward, easy-to-read style is an ideal novel for young people wanting to learn more about the immigrant experience.
